In determining what kind of window treatments to get, you have almost too many options to count. If you are wondering if you should opt for blinds or drapery for your custom window treatments, you need to keep in mind the purpose of your window treatment – what are you going to use the room for?
For example, in a living room, where you want a more polished and elegant appearance, drapery would probably work better than shades. But in a room such as a kitchen or bathroom, where light and space are more desired, shades would probably be the better choice.
Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Shades can be made from different materials, such as fabric, vinyl, or woven woods. Shades fold or roll up snugly when they are drawn, so they take up much less space than drapery. They also allow for better control over how much light and heat goes into or out of a room. Plus, they match well with a large range of colors and styles of décor.
On the negative side, they do tend to get dusty and require more frequent cleaning. And the shades, even when closed, still allow some light to enter. Shades also are not as effective as drapery in retaining heat.
Drapery can add an eye-catching look to a window, framing it and giving it an elegant charm that blinds just cannot deliver. They also draw more attention to the window, which is one of the primary advantages of drapery.
Another plus is that it is more effective at keeping out heat and light or, conversely, retaining heat. Drapery is available in a large array of colors, patterns, and materials.
One of the drawbacks of drapery, however, is that it takes up more space than blinds, and so it can make a room appear smaller than if shades were used.
