When shopping for a new window treatment, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is whether you’d like to use ready-made drapery or custom drapery. Their unique qualities can definitely tip the scales in one direction or another!
■ More freedom in your design. If you have a specific image in mind for the room you’re making-over, then it might be difficult to find ready-made drapery that very closely resembles what you want. You may even find yourself having to compromise and settle on a style that’s “close enough.” If you go the custom route, though, nearly every aspect of the project can be tweaked to your specifications. Color, fabric type, pleat style, degree of fullness—a drapery professional can help you bring your artistic vision to life.
■ A Better Fit. All houses are slightly different, and there’s really not a “standard” size for windows, rooms, and wall fixtures in the architectural world. Ready-made may look frumpy, scant, or just plain homely. Custom-made drapes can be specially measured, colored, and arranged in a way that flatters a specific window or room layout, making for a much prettier final product.
■ Longer Lifespan. Custom-made drapes tend to last longer than their pre-fabricated cousins. Generally speaking, they’re constructed out of higher-grade materials and assembled with a much stricter standard of quality. They also don’t spend any time gathering dust (and deteriorating) on a store shelf or in a warehouse. The up-front cost of custom drapery may be high, but if cared for properly, they’ll remain beautiful and whole for years to come.
Whether you choose ready-made drapery or custom drapery for your project will probably depend upon your budget, your house’s overall aesthetic, and the degree of control you want over the final product. Few folks have a lot of luck using mass-produced designs, and most people can’t imagine not taking the custom route. So take some time to weigh the pros and cons to decide which one you’d prefer. And don’t worry: if you can’t make up your mind, one of our on-staff experts will be happy to offer their input!
