That is an old decorating aphorism, and so true. To give a room that finished look, the final touch that really brings it to life doesn’t happen until you hang the drapery.
As with windows, drapery on doors can be used to open up, enhance and improve a room. For example, on something such as a patio door, you can hang the drapery out to the wall – so that it is away from the doors – and up to ceiling. It will make the door appear much larger and have a much bigger impact on the room.
Sliding glass doors are great for opening up the house to the outside and letting in lots of sun. But if you need to provide a little shade or privacy, drapery is the easiest and best way to do that. Because drapery is so simple and easy to use when you want to adjust the natural light, it is the best choice for sliding glass doors.
Hanging drapery for these kinds of doors can get a little tricky, however, because you don’t want to interfere with the opening and closing of the door. A few tips for these types of doors include using tiebacks to hold the drapery panels aside, particularly on the side with the door handle, so that it does not interfere with the use of the door. Mount the top treatment high enough above the door frame so that it doesn’t rub against people’s heads as they pass through the door. Make sure the drapery panels are not touching the floor either so that they can stay clean.
Some people also like the look of drapery over French doors. Here also, you can hang them well above the door frame and several inches out to the side beyond the frame, with the drapery dropping down to the floor. If you use a rod that has larger rings, it will be easier to move the drapery aside to allow light into the room and to allow easier access to the doors. You can also use a traversing drapery track. Almost any type of fabric will work with French doors.
Custom made valences also work well with French doors. They can be made so that they match with the décor in the room or other window treatments.
